Research

Our lab uses virtual reality, behavioral neuroscience, neuroimaging, and psychophysiology to study learning, memory, motivation, and clinical behavior in humans.

What We Study

Virtual Reality and Reward Learning

We develop immersive virtual environments to study how people learn associations with rewarding stimuli, including alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, food, and other motivational cues.

Substance Use and Cue Reactivity

We examine how substance-related cues influence reward learning, craving, attentional bias, and avoidance tendencies related to nicotine, cannabis, vaping, alcohol, and food.

Learning, Memory, and Clinical Behavior

We study spatial memory, fear conditioning, individual differences, and clinically relevant behavior using controlled behavioral tasks and translational neuroscience methods.

Current and Recent Lines of Work

Virtual conditioned place preference
We use immersive virtual environments to translate classic conditioned place preference paradigms into human studies of alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, food, and other reward-related cues.

Nicotine, cannabis, and vaping-related learning
Recent studies examine how nicotine, cannabis cues, and vaping stimuli influence reward learning, avoidance tendencies, craving, and conditioned responses in college-aged participants.

Fear conditioning and psychophysiology
Our work investigates how nicotine and related factors influence fear conditioning, contextual learning, and physiological responses such as electrodermal activity and ECG.

Virtual reality in clinical and medical contexts
Collaborative work applies virtual reality methods to clinical settings, including postoperative recovery and interventions targeting health-related behavior.

Spatial memory and individual differences
We study spatial learning and memory using virtual navigation paradigms, with attention to sex differences, hormonal factors, and individual variation in cognitive performance.
